One conference for researchers and for the engineers who use their work.
AXIS is planned for both academic and industry delegates.
Each track has an academic co-chair and an industry co-chair. Field case studies are reviewed alongside research papers. In the Challenge Exchange, companies present unsolved technical problems and meet research teams who could work on them.
AXIS continues the International Symposium on Energy Challenges & Mechanics, which Dr Henry Tan launched in Aberdeen in 2014. The series has drawn delegates from 57 countries.
We started this conference so that researchers working on the energy transition can meet the engineers who carry it out. It runs for three days in February in Aberdeen, which has been the base of the North Sea industry for fifty years.
Seven tracks, each organised around field problems
Track 01Offshore Energy & Subsurface
Geomechanics, well integrity, CO₂ storage, geothermal, subsea systems and flow assurance.
Track 02Offshore Wind & Marine Renewables
Floating foundations, moorings and cables, metocean loads, wave and tidal, installation and O&M.
Track 03Hydrogen, Storage & Conversion
Electrolysis and hydrogen infrastructure, batteries, fuel cells, e-fuels and thermal storage.
Track 04Mechanics of Materials & Structures
Fracture, fatigue and corrosion, composites, micromechanics and computational modelling.
Track 05Digital Engineering, AI & Robotics
Digital twins of offshore assets, wind farms, wells and grids; machine learning for inspection and integrity; robotic and autonomous systems; sensing.
Track 06Energy Systems, Policy & Just Transition
Economics and regulation, skills and workforce, supply chains, communities and energy security.
Track 07Decommissioning & Late-Life Assets
Well plugging and abandonment, removal and reuse of platforms and pipelines, recycling, cost and regulation.
Industry case studies, PGR showcase and the Research Image Competition
Formats for engineers reporting field work, for postgraduate researchers, and for research photographs.

We have proposed indexed proceedings (Springer LNME, subject to approval) and a journal special issue for extended papers.
The Challenge Exchange
Partners present real technical problems, and research teams book follow-up meetings on site.
Industry panels and recruitment
Panels with the North Sea's operators and regulators, plus a talent wall for PhD and graduate roles.
Awards and CPD
Best Paper, Best Student and Industry Impact awards, the Research Image Competition, and a CPD-hours certificate.

Five steps, from abstract to presentation

Submit an abstract
300 words, in one of seven tracks, as a case study, or in the PGR showcase.
Receive a decision
Rolling review, with a decision in about ten days.
Register
Pay by card, or by invoice against a university purchase order.
Present and publish
Present in Aberdeen, then submit an extended paper.
Plenary speakers
Four plenary sessions with speakers from operators, regulators and academia. Names are announced from 8 November.
Registration fees
Full-conference passes include every session, lunches, the welcome reception, the exhibition and a CPD certificate. Prices include UK VAT.

Aberdeen, the host city
Aberdeen has been the base of the North Sea oil and gas industry for fifty years. The Energy Transition Zone, a new deep-water harbour and the Aberdeen Bay offshore wind farm are all here.
